2.13. Check and service of the accumulator

GENERAL INFORMATION

Tools and materials necessary for service of the accumulator

1 – the guard necessary in order that electrolyte did not get on the person.
2 – soda. The soda diluted in water is necessary for neutralization of the poured electrolyte.
3 – vaseline. It is used for protection of plugs of the accumulator against corrosion.
4 – wire brush. It is necessary for removal of traces of corrosion from plugs of the accumulator and wires.
5 – plastic washers. Are established on the accumulator under plugs of wires.
6 – stripper. It is used for removal of plugs from the accumulator.
7 – a kind of the wire brush used for cleaning of plugs of the accumulator.
8 – rubber gloves which need to be used during the work with electrolyte.

Corrosion of poles of the battery

Corrosion of poles of the battery is shown in the form of friable white powder.

Prevention

Electrolyte in the battery represents the poisonous and corroding acid. Therefore it is necessary to avoid hit of electrolyte in eyes, on skin, the painted surfaces and so on. In case of spill of electrolyte wash out this place plentiful amount of cold water. If electrolyte got to eyes, after washing of eyes water, immediately address to the doctor.

During the operation of the battery hydrogen therefore it is never impossible to smoke or handle naked flame or scintillating substances in close proximity to the accumulator is formed.

Always prior to work on electric equipment disconnect minus a wire from the accumulator. It will prevent emergence of unintentionally short circuits.

Never disconnect wires from the battery at the working engine.

Always disconnect wires from the battery if battery charging with use of the external charger is made.

Always disconnect wires from the battery and a wire from the generator for the period of car repairs with use of devices of electric welding.

Before service of the accumulator gather all necessary tools and materials.

Purity of the battery and, in particular, its external surface is especially important as the dirt layer collecting on it easily forms electroconductive routes which lead to a battery self-discharge. Purity is important not only for the served battery, as well as for the unattended battery which, despite the name, is not absolutely unattended.

PERFORMANCE ORDER
1. Remove wire plugs from the accumulator.
2. Using a metal brush, clear plugs of the accumulator and the plug of wires.
3. Make cleaning of plugs of the accumulator before emergence of light brilliant metal.
4. If necessary wash out plugs soda solution in warm water. Be careful that solution of soda did not get to banks of the accumulator.
5. Check that nuts of the fastener of the accumulator are reliably tightened. Do not draw a nut as the case of the accumulator can be damaged.
6. Before connection of clips of the accumulator grease plugs with acid-free vaseline and an anticorrosive compound.
